Neem Germination Seeds

Neem (Azadirachta indica) is grown extensively throughout the tropics for its multiple utility. Neem propagation seeds are procured from genetically qualified, high yielding trees as selection of trees based on fruit yield will fetch far better results in Neem, as the fruits are the source of oil and many chemical compounds.

Collection of fruits

Neem fruits are collected when the greenish fruits start turning to yellow which is the optimum stage for collection of fruits. Care has been taken to collect only the freshly fallen fruits. When the ripe yellow fruits are collected, immediate action has been taken to depulp them immediately to avoid fermentation and heating.

Seed Extraction and Processing
As only fruits are collected in Neem, appropriate seed processing techniques are followed for achieving high physical and physiological quality of seeds. The fruits are processed soon after harvesting. The time gap between harvest and processing has been carefully followed to extract quality plantation seeds. And the extracted Neem propagation seeds are engaged for Pre-cleaning, Pre-curing, Drying.

Neem Growth and Yield
No pretreatment is required for germination of seeds. Fresh seeds start germinating from 7 days of sowing and germination is complete in 24 days. Over 80% germination can be observed in fresh seeds.

Neem is grown for its seeds, leaves and timber. The tree starts fruits from the 4th or 5th year and steady yield from the 10th year. Each Neem tree at this age can yield 20-25 kg of fruits per tree. The ratio of seed to pulp is about 1:2. The rotation age for timber is 35-40 years and for fuel wood is about 8 years. The Neem timber yield is about 108-137 m3per hectare.

Environmental Requirements
Neem tree is found in areas with annual mean maximum temperature up to 32 to 42o C and minimum temperature of 4 to 210C. Temperatures below 4oC and frost are unfavorable. Neem tree grows well in the plains and in lower foothills, but found even up to 1830 meters elevation.

Neem tree comes up well in areas with an average annual rainfall of 450 – 1200 mm. It grows well in loamy, clayey and black cotton soil. It also thrives better than other species on dry, stony, clayey and shallow soils. It can also come up on soil, where there is hard calcareous or clay pan just below the soil surface. Water logging and poorly drained soils are unsuitable for Neem.

Neem is a light demander. It is frost tender species and cannot withstand excessive cold, especially in seedling stages. Well extensive root system makes Neem drought hardy. It is a fire tender species.
