    Moringa oleifera Lam belonging to the family Moringaceae is a handsome softwood tree, native of India, occurring world-wide in the tropics and sub-tropics. In India Moringa oleifera is grown all over the subcontinent for its tender pods (Drumstick) and also for its leaves and flowers. The pods (Drumsticks) of moringa oleifera are very popular vegetables in South Indian cuisine and valued for their distinctly inviting flavour. Moringa is a backyard tree for daily use in more than two million homesteads of South India. Ancient Indian literature makes mention of moringa oleifera as an interesting plant due to its widespread use in agriculture, medicine and industry.

    Collection of Moringa Fruits
    Through our SPN (seed procurement network) during the high yielding season, brown coloured moringa fruits at 20 days after anthesis are harvested for recovery of good quality seeds with high germination potential from the proximal and middle portion of the fruit compared to the distal portion. Black followed by brown coloured seeds from fresh collections has been used for germination purpose. This ensures collection of better quality Moringa Oleifera cultivation seeds and ensures higher seedling quality attributes--i.e. germination and vigour index.

    Seed extraction and processing:
  • Drying : Harvested pods are dried for one or two days under shade with good ventilation to 8% moisture content.
  • Extraction of Seeds By Depulping : The seeds are extracted manually by opening the pods using gentle pressure on them. On opening, the seeds are separated freely. Small, shrivelled and damaged seeds are removed.
  • Pre-Cleaning : The impurities like twigs, brak, foliage etc. has been removed before any other operation to reduce fungal attack.
  • Seed Grading : To obtain good, uniform and quality Moringa plants, the procured and processed seeds are graded with the specific gravity separator.
  • Storage : Before storing the seeds, moringa seeds are engaged for pre treatment. After Pre treatment the processed Drumstick seeds are packed in polythene bags and stored for up to 4 months.

  • CHARACTERISTICS OF PKM-1 MORINGA:

    PKM1 Moringa starts flowering from 90 to 100 days. Harvest can be done from 160 to 170 days. The drumstick yield would be about 250-350 fruits per tree/per year. The height of the PKM1 moringa drumstick is 65 to 75CM and weighs about 160 grams.
