In Asian Greenfields only matured harvesting is done as the premature harvesting leads to reduced seed weight, oil content and germ inability, increased seed weight, lower moisture content

Seed Extraction and Processing :
Extraction of Seeds : Castor germination seeds not mechanically hulled were shelled by spreading the capsules 15 cm deep on a threshing floor under the sun. To achieve highest yield, the castor clusters are harvested at maturity, tied in bundles and hung to dry.

Pre-Curing and Drying : The harvested capsules are placed heaps over which cow-during water is sprinkled to soften the husk and assist shelling. This practice is to impart a good colour and gloss to be seed. The treated heaps are covered with straw and weighted to exclude air. After four to ten days the capsules are spread in the sun to dry.

Storage : Before storing the castor seeds are dried to 7 to 8 & moisture content and stored at dry, cool place.

Ricinus Communis Germination:

Germination : Castor can be sown directly in the field. Germination starts in 7 to 10 days and is complete in 25 to 45 days. The spacing adopted generally ranges from 90-120 cm between rows and 45-60 cm between plants in the row in India. Castor bean is a tropical plant that has high photosynthetic capacity with high humidity. Low humidity strongly inhibits photosynthesis and freezing temperatures kill seedlings.

Environmental Requirements : Castor is reported to tolerate annual precipitation of 200 to 4290 mm. It is a frost tender species. Plants do best on fertile, well-drained soils which are neither alkaline nor saline sandy and clayey loam is best suited.
